Wire rod is a semi-finished product which is extruded from steel billet in a steel plant and used primarily for wire production. Wire rod is produced using all modern steelmaking processes, including basic oxygen and electric arc furnace processes. Although wire rod can be produced in various shapes (round, square, hexagonal and rectangular), most of the rolled wire rods are round in cross-section. Wire rods, also referred to as ‘bar in coils’, are of two types: flat and ribbed coil.
It is used in the construction of parts that need to withstand impact and abrasion such as discs and milling cutters of agricultural machinery, concrete crushers, etc., and also due to its resistance to fatigue, used in the production of flat springs.
